Possible Project Topics
I am very interested in Robben Island, Nelson Mandella, Aprtheid in South Africa and the segregation of races.
I want to focus more on Robben Island and tie into how they kept huge political leaders like Nelson Mandella separate from society. I want to know why they did this and how long were they in jail and what were they in there for.

Maus Images
On page 74 in MAUS, it states "But these damn bugs are eating me alive." This was an interesting quote because it is saying that an insect is bugging them when they are all animals in the story.
I didn't discuss this in the seminar, but I think that one of the reason the author made the characters animals was because that all the other books that discuss the Holocaust are strictly fact based books and the author was just trying to sell a novel. I think that since he was an artist it did helped, but I think the main goal was selling and making a profit off a book.
It is really interest that the Jews are mice and the Nazis are cats because obviously cats are more powerful then mice and they eat mice. Also, that mice are considered a pointless rodent in society and that is the way the Nazis thought of Jews. They were trying to dehumanize them by giving them an animal that was just scattered about not doing in society and that is the way the Nazis viewed Jews. I thought this concept was extremely interesting.

current event- debt relief
http://www.businessweek.com/news/2010-07-01/imf-world-bank-support-debt-relief-for-congo.html
This article discusses how on July 1, 2010 debt collectors have agreed to give the Congo enough money to wipe all of their debts away and let them not have any more economic stress as of now. The article states, "The International Monetary Fund and the World Bank agreed to support $12.3 billion in debt relief for the Democratic Republic of Congo, erasing obligations almost the size of central African country’s economy." It then states that the country was celebrating its 50th anniversary from becoming independent from Belgium and the 8 million dollars was announced just after that. Canada has brought this to their government and they don't think this is fair so they are going after Congo's resources. But, this did not pass for Canada and Congo has kept all of the money the IMF has given them.
I think this article is really interesting because the debt collectors are doing a very gracious thing for the Congo in given them this money. It allows the country to get back on top and improves their governance. Just as long as the Congo does not go over on their debts again the IMF will keep the money in the Congo.
Why did the IMF decided to give 8 million dollars to the Congo?
Why did they do it two days after the 50th anniversary of celebrating their freedom from Congo?
Will the debts cancels all the debts int he past?

Current Event- Congo

In this article it discusses how the Congo has immense economic resources and is the centre of Africa's World War. This conflict supported by Angola, Namibia, and Zimbabwe verses Uganda and Rwanda. People in that region are still afraid of militia and the army. It is said to be the worst emergency in Africa thus far. The fighting was due to the countries mineral wealth and taking advantage of other countries resources. This war has taken 3 million lives. Also, another militia had signed a peace deal with the government in 2009 of January, but clashes broke up in August. While trying to bring the situation under control, the government invited the troops of Rwanda to help an operations against the Rwandan rebel Hutu militias active in Congo. Rwanda then arrested the Hutu militias' main rival because he was the main rival in the area.
I thought this article was extremely boring because it just stated fact after fact.
Why wasn't this issue solves in 1965?
Why was this considered a "humanitarian crisis?"
